Optimising your home network

When you are spending most of your time working from home, the network speed becomes crucial for you to connect and work with people. Given that everyone is having similar internet connection speed, it is important that we have good network at home.

How do we achieve that? We need to understand that the wireless signal can be block by closed door. So if you need to work with door closed at home like me, you will either need a repeater that can extend the signal or a wire connection.

Lately, there is this AiMesh that helps to seamlessly repeat the signal using the same SSID. So the connection when you move from one part of the house to the other is seamless.

How do we know if our wireless signal after the door is closed is good?

We can use tools like WifiInfoview. It show which SSID has strong signal quality so we can determine from the reading whether our signal in the room that we work is good or not. Signal strength of 100 is good. Therefore, by having data we can then determine the next courseof action to take.

Would we know the speed?

The speed can be determined by running a speed test. I use speedtest.net to test my internet speed. We have to also be careful that even the speed is achieved, we should also understand that the duration that this speed and strength of the wireless connection is sustainable. To do that, we use Wifi Analyzer to determine this duration. There are many such wifi analyzer around, we just got to find the right one. My opinion Wifi Analyzer from farproc is good in the Google Play store.

How do we enhanced if the signal is weaken?

When we confirm that the signal is weak, we may consider using a LAN connection to the room or using a repeater or AiMesh to enhance the wireless signal. I converted my ASUS AC56S to a repeater in order to ensure the kitchen and the back of house has good wireless signal.

In summary, we need tools like WifiInfoView and Wifi Analyzer to determine the wireless signal, speedtest to determine the internet speed. Also, redeploy hardware to enhance the network signal.

That's all folks!
